The Boyue was designed by a team led by Peter Horbury, the vehicle’s exterior design combines traditional Chinese cultural elements with modern languages of fashion. Since its launch, the Boyue has received much attention in the Chinese automobile market. The Boyue was facelifted in 2018. After 36 months, the total production number was 700,000.

Boyue Pro debuts in China on July 2019 with new GKUI infotainment system, all new cabin design and a new option of 1.5L turbo engine that co-developed with Volvo which is same as one's in Geely Binyue.

The Proton X70 is a right hand drive version of the Geely Boyue with minor cosmetic differences. The Proton X70 does not share a single component with any existing Proton models.

In April 2018, Proton opened up an online poll to the public to vote on the name. Participants could choose between: PX7, X7, X70 and X700 or voice in their own input.

It was unveiled the name as X70 on September 2018. The Proton X70 was previewed at the 2018 Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show and officially launched on the 12th of December 2018 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

In June 2018, it was announced that the initial units were going to be fully imported (CBU) from China with latter models being locally assembled (CKD) at Proton's plant.

The X70 is available with four variants: Standard 2WD, Executive 2WD, Executive AWD and Premium 2WD. All variants are powered by the same Geely engine of 1.8 litre turbocharged gasoline direct injection or TGDI engine and paired to a 6-speed automatic gearbox.

In August 2019, Proton has announced that they will sell a special version of the car called the Proton X70 Merdeka Edition of which only 62 are available for sale to celebrate Malaysia's 62nd independence day on 31st August 2019. This limited edition car will be based on the Premium 2WD variant but with some exterior appearance differences such as a Quartz Black roof (includes A pillars, wing mirrors, area around the glass roof and rear spoiler), and there are door visors and a rear bumper scuff plate fitted too. The Proton X70 Merdeka Edition is priced at RM126,100 which is RM2,300 more than the regular Premium 2WD.

One of the key design ideas that are unique to the X70 is seen at the front grille, which is referred to as the “infinite weave,” a pattern inspired by batik and Malaysian wood carvings not only on the exterior, but also on the speaker covers inside the SUV. The chrome surround on the grille is also another standout feature, as its shape is inspired by a bow, one of the traditional weapons used in the past. The Malayan tiger is the source of inspiration, seeing how the big cat can be found on various symbols like The National Emblem of Malaysia (Jata Negara in Malay) and obviously, Proton’s logo. Therefore, the X70’s muscular body surfacing and the headlamp design are reminiscent of the body and eyes of a tiger, a further showcase of Proton’s identity.

The X70 dimensions is identical to the Geely Boyue since it is a re-badge version. The X70 is marketed as a C-segment SUV.

A tonneau cover, air purifier system, rear air vents, automatic dual zone air conditioning, steering wheel switches, tilt and telescopic adjustment, LCD meter combination, central door locking with auto lock and push start button are all standard interior related features.

Note that the Premium 2WD variants gets additional voice recognition functionality. The GKUI Android-based infotainment system is a revamped system found in the Boyue to operate properly in Malaysia.

All versions are equipped with ABS, EBD, brake assist, ESC, traction control and six airbags.

Proton X70 uses Hot Press Forming (HPF) body structures to form the passenger cell and is able to provide a high level of protection to its occupants. The HPF cell is supplemented with six airbags for all variants, ISOFIX child seat mounting points as well as seat belts with pretensioners and load limiters. By combining these elements, the Proton X70 received a perfect score for the side impact test as well as for head protection technology. The Premium 2WD variant features Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) which is a suite of collision avoidance systems which consists of:
